Women's Tennis on to SSC Finals

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Barry University women’s tennis team is moving on to the Sunshine State Conference Championships finals after beating host Rollins, 5-1, in Friday’s semifinals.

The No. 1-ranked Buccaneers (22-1) will play for their fifth straight league tournament title following the win over the No. 8 Tars. Barry meets No. 7 Saint Leo (19-4) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the finals.

Barry’s No. 6-ranked doubles team of Emma Onila and Linda Fritschken rolled to an 8-1 win over Shannon Etten and Taylor Brown at No. 2 doubles. The Bucs duo of Karina Goia and Blanka Szavay defeated Johanna Olsson and Mariana Salvador, 8-2, at No. 3. Rollins’ Elissa DeCampli and Ashley Rosenberg knocked off No. 25 Kimmy Twelker and Ana Pain, 9-7, at the No. 1 flight.

Up 2-1 after pairs play, Twelker deliverd Barry’s first singles win when she cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ashley Loft at the No. 6 spot. Fritscken, the No. 43-ranked player in the country, was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Shannon Etten at No. 3. Barry’s Elisabeth Abanda secured the clinching point when she beat Mariana Salvador, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.

The Bucs led in the three other matches – one of which had entered a third set.
