MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Jayla Trombley has been a fighter for quite a while. Saturday, she and the Buccaneers volleyball team didn’t go down without a fight.

Not even with No. 16 Florida Southern on the other side of the net.

Barry University volleyball team’s impressive late-season run was halted if only for a match after the Moccasins beat the Bucs, 25-15, 25-11, 25-20 in the Health & Sports Center. The Buccaneers (17-10, 7-7 Sunshine State Conference) were coming off a sweep of Saint Leo on Friday which vaulted Barry into a three-way tie for third place in the league. It was the Bucs’ seventh win in eight matches.

Saturday with their backs against the wall, and a senior leader pushing her teammates for every ounce of energy, the Bucs made a late-match run on the Mocs (22-5, 12-2) in the third set. Down 17-11, Barry used kills by Ivana Didanovic and Jenny Trinidad on a dig and assist by Paola Buitrago and four FSC errors during a 6-2 run to cut it to 19-17. Florida Southern, however, went on to win six of the last nine points to seal the deal.

An emotional Trombley finished with seven kills, eight digs and a block. She also matched her season-high with three assists.

Fellow senior Kristina Boncheva had eight kills and five digs in her final home match of a one-year college volleyball career. Trinidad had seven kills, 21 assists and 10 digs. Tasha Begon had six kills, and Ivana Didanovic five.

FSC’s Kate Stromberg had 11 kills, and Kayshia Brady eight. Ali Skayhan finished with 37 assists.

Barry plays at Nova Southeastern Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Davie, Fla., before finishing the regular season Friday at Tampa. The new NCAA South Region poll is expected to be released Wednesday. The top eight teams in each region around the country are invited to the NCAA Tournament.
