MIAMI SHORES, FL—The 22nd-ranked Barry Buccaneers walked off with a 5-4 win over previously unbeaten St. Michael’s in an up-and-down baseball game at Feinbloom Field on Monday night.
JC Cardenas trotted home with the winning run in the 10th inning. Reliever Rich Reo (0-1) hit Cardenas on an 0-2 count, then, on a pickoff attempt, threw the ball down the right field line. Cardenas advanced to third on the error, them the Knights’ rightfielder Nick Nelson compounded the problem when his throw to third skipped past Matt Feeney and Cardenas came home with the game-winner.
The Bucs (16-7) loaded the bases in the second inning off SMC starter Andrew DuPrat and Tyler Kellman scored on a ground ball by Connor Oliveiri.
The Knights (3-1) struck back in the top of the third off Barry starter Frank Szczepanik. Dan McGuirl led off with a double and went to third on a wild pitch. Tyler Wild followed with an RBI single and promptly stole second and third. One out later, Alec Tice delivered an RBI single to plate Wild.
The Bucs got back on top in the bottom of the frame. Sheehan Planas-Arteaga walked and Adrian English jacked a double off the wall in dead center. Kellman brought both runners home with a single.
St. Michael’s took the lead back in the seventh inning on a two-run homer from Jacob Benoche and the Bucs tied it at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame on an error by Wild.
Calvin Rayburn (5-1) worked around a hit in the top of the 10th inning to earn the win for the Bucs. Reo took the loss. DuPrat, who threw 144 pitches in his first outing of the year, allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks and struck out five.
The Bucs face the Panthers of Adelphi on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 6:00 pm.
