MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers posted a doubleheader sweep over the Nova Southeastern Sharks in Sunshine State Conference softball action at Buccaneer Field on Saturday. The Bucs won game one 5-1 and took the nightcap 3-1.

In the first game, the Bucs (19-10, 7-2 SSC) built a 5-0 lead in the first four innings, but not without a fair amount of drama. In the second inning, the Sharks’ leadoff batter was called out on appeal after it was discovered that her number had been written wrong on the lineup card. In the third inning, NSU’s Shelby Talon led off with a single. On the sacrifice attempt by Lorena Spaulding, she was originally ruled safe, called out on appeal, and then ruled safe again, leading Barry coach Danielle Penner to play the game under protest.

The Bucs plated two runs in the second inning. Britney Pugh (4-2) singled to lead off and, one out later, Kristina Pazienza also singled. After a fielder’s choice from Kayla Monroy erased Pugh, Alexis Kent delivered a run with a base hit up the middle. Natalia Ojeda knocked in Monroy with a single to center.

In the third inning, Sarah Broeseker and Pugh singled to put runners at the corner and Kelly Martinez drove in a run with a base hit. Nova starter Erika Garcia (0-2) was relieved by Laura Saladrigas who promptly walked Monroy and Kent to force in another run.

The Bucs capped their scoring with an RBI single from Martinez in the fourth.

The Sharks (13-18, 2-10 SSC) got their only run off of Pugh in the sixth, as the loaded the bases with one out on three straight singles and Saladrigas drove in Melanie Spicola with a ground out.

Pugh earned her third straight win, holding the Sharks to a run on five hits in seven innings. She struck out four and did not issue a walk. Garcia was tagged with the loss. She allowed four runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings.

In the finale, Nova jumped on top 1-0 in the second on a solo homer from Talon. But they gave the run back in the bottom of the inning with some shaky defense. Martinez reached with one out on a dropped pop up by Tanaka. After a strikeout, Monroy singled to left to, and took second on the throw, to leave runners at second and third. Both moved up on a wild pitch by Shark starter Jennie Van Doellen (11-12), tying the game at 1-1. With Ashley Fernandez at the plate, Van Doellen got a strikeout, but catcher Ashley Silviera dropped the ball, allowing Fernandez to take off for first. Silviera compounded the problem, by throwing the ball down the right field line, allowing Monroy to score and first baseman Garcia interfered with Fernandez rounding the bag and allowed her to reach second.

Martinez capped the scoring for Barry with a leadoff homer in the fourth.

Alexis Yohe (9-5) earned the win for the Bucs. She held the Sharks to just four hits and the one run on Talon’s homer. She struck out five without issuing a walk. Van Doellen took the loss for the second time in the series. She allowed just one earned run and struck out six.

The Bucs travel to Tampa to face the defending SSC champs, the Spartans, next weekend.
