HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Barry University men's golf team rests in second place after two rounds of the South/Southeast Super Regional at Mission Inn Golf & Resort.
The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers shot 296 in Tuesday's second round on the 6,928-yard El Campeon course, and entered the clubhouse at 580 after 36 holes. Nova Southeastern matched Barry's opening-round 284 Tuesday to take a nine-stroke lead into Wednesday's final round. Georgia College & State is third, six strokes behind the Bucs, after shooting 295 in the second round.
Florida Southern is fourth at 588, Lynn fifth at 594, West Florida and Columbus State are tied for sixth at 596, South Carolina-Aiken eighth at 598 and Barton College ninth at 599. The top seven teams from the 20-team field and the top individual not on a qualifying team advance to the NCAA Championships May 19-24 in Hershey, Pa.
Barry freshman Adam Svensson shot 73 Tuesday, and is fourth on the individual leaderboard, two strokes behind co-leaders Ricardo Celia and Ben Taylor of Nova Southeastern at 1-under 143. Celia shot par Tuesday, and Taylor's 1-under 71 bumped him into a tie for the lead at 141. South Carolina-Aiken's J.P. Solis shot 2-under 70 to vault nine spots into third place.
Bucs junior Scott Smyers is in a three-way tie for fifth at 144, following his 2-over 74. Both Smyers and Svensson each had one birdie in the second round.
Barry senior Simon Forsslund shot his second straight 73, making three birdies Tuesday. He birdied back-to-back holes on the par-4 13th and par-5 14th. Forsslund is in a five-way tie for 13th. Senior Marcus Segerstrom shot 76 in the second round, and is tied for 18th with three other players. Segerstrom birdied the 515-yard first hole and the 340-yard 13th. Junior Jared Dalga shot 77 for the second straight day. He birdied the 364-yard 16th for the second consecutive day.
