WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Fabian Groetsch won the Varner Memorial Invitational Flight A singles title, beating Lander's Vincent Verpeauz, 6-3, 6-2, in Sunday's final. Groetsch, a junior at Barry University, was one of three tournament champions in the three-day event hosted by Rollins College.
Barry's Ahmed Triki, a freshman from Tunis, Tunisia, won the Flight B championship, sophomore teammate Eduardo Alfonzo, 0-6, 6-2, 7-5, in a battle of Buccaneers.
Bucs freshman Nico Dreer, an Albstadt, Germany, native, won the Flight C final in convincing fashion over Bethune-Cookman's Gilbert Rotich, 6-2, 6-3.
Barry's doubles team of Kevin Sielmann and Franco Echenique lost in the Flight B finals to Lander's duo of Paolo Fernandes and Verpeauz, 8-3.
Barry senior Leo Vivas was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Rollins' Malte Christesen in the Flight A consolation. Echenique fell in the Flight B consolation, 6-4, 6-2, to Lander's Paolo Volpicelli.
The Bucs will compete in the Pembroke Lakes Invitational Oct. 19-21.
