BOCA RATON, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team dropped the first of a three game series against No. 8 Lynn University Friday afternoon, 7-1, in  a clash of Sunshine State Conference rivals.

The Buccaneers (20-13, 3-10 SSC) amassed nine hits on the night, but were limited to just one run by the ‘Knights’ Vandernaald (8-1) who shut them down through the first seven innings.

Lynn (27-7, 10-3 SSC) jumped ahead with runs in the second and third innings and then scored twice more in the fourth to make it a 4-0 game and never looked back.

Adrian Benitez (3-3) battled through five innings of work and scattered eight hits while allowing five runs, four earned, and striking out four despite the loss.

Barry’s only run came in the eighth on Sheehan Planas-Arteaga’s sacrifice fly that drove in Carlos Matamoros.

Eight of the nine starters collected a hit for the Bucs, but Matamoros was the only Buc with a multi-hit afternoon.

Barry and Lynn are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 pm with live-stat and broadcast coverage available through Barry University’s athletics website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
