MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University men’s tennis team breezed to a 5-0 victory over Stillman Monday in the NCAA Division II South Region 2 semifinal at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The win sent the No. 2-seeded Buccaneers (22-2) on to play Lynn (16-6) in Tuesday's 11 a.m. final. Seventh-seeded Stillman capped its season with a 27-5 record.
Barry senior Ollie Lemaitre tied Marco Mokrzycki’s school career doubles victory record when he and partner Ahmed Triki, the No. 2-ranked tandem in the country, beat Jangeun Lee and David Torres, 8-2, at the No. 1 flight to complete the pairs sweep. Lemaitre and Mokrzycki, who broke Thomas Hipp’s previous doubles mark last year, share the school mark with 79 pairs victories.
Barry’s No. 2 doubles team of Romain Costamagna and Leo Vivas put the Bucs on the board first with an 8-0 sweep of Jose Pojasi and Yonwaba Pupuma. At No. 3, Barry’s Kevin Sielmann and Renato Lombardi also recorded a sweep, beating Aleksandar Zobec and Fernando Garcia, 8-0, to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead entering singles.
Sielmann was on top of his game in singles, coasting to his second sweep of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Edward Symonett at No. 6.
Barry’s Nico Dreer sealed the deal with the Bucs’ fourth sweep of the day as he blanked Pupuma, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4.
Triki, the seventh-ranked singles player in the nation, was up a set, 6-3, and leading Lee, 1-0 (deuce), in the second at No. 1 singles when the match finished. Barry’s 11th-ranked Fabian Groetsch was a game away from closing out his match with Torres, leading 6-0, 5-1, at No. 2 when it ended.
Costamagna built a 6-1, 4-0 lead on Zobec at No. 3 before the match was completed. Vivas also was up a set at No. 5 singles, having established a 6-0, 4-1 lead over Pojasi.
Barry and Lynn will meet for the region championship for the third time in the last four years.
