ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Barry University women’s tennis team shut out Indiana Pennsylvania, 5-0, Wednesday in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships at Sanlando Park.
The No. 1 Buccaneers (25-1) advance to Thursday’s 9 a.m. quarterfinals to play No. 21 Southwest Baptist (23-3). The No. 42 Crimson Hawks’ season ended at 19-10.
Barry swept the doubles without relinquishing a game. Seventh-ranked Linda Fritschken and Emma Onila recorded the first point with an 8-0 victory over Sophie Butland and Alanna McFail at No. 2. Blanka Szavay and Karina Goia blanked Ranvita Mahto and Rachel Wood, 8-0, at No. 3. Sixth-ranked Kimmy Twelker and Ana Pain were 8-0 winners over Tanya Timko and Erika Schnaas at No. 1.
Following roughly a half-hour delay for lightning after the completion of doubles, the Buccaneers picked up in singles where they left off in pairs play. All six of the Bucs won their first set in singles.
Elisabeth Abanda’s 6-1, 6-0 win over Mahto at No. 4 gave Barry a 4-0 lead. Fritschken, the No. 23-ranked player in the country, wrapped it up with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Schnaas at No. 3.
Onila, ranked No. 7 in singles, was a game away from recording a win, having built a 6-1, 5-2 lead on 19th-ranked Timko at the top flight. Ninth-ranked Goia had a 6-1, 1-2 lead on Butland at No. 2. Senior Cristina Valladares was also a game away from capping her No. 5 match with Wood, leading 6-0, 5-2. Senior Akemi Maehama led McFail, 6-1, 2-1, at No. 6.
