Fred Marcondes Santos enters his second season as a member of the Barry University volleyball staff and brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the program.
For over 14 years, Marcondes coached a variety of men’s and women’s club teams in his native Rio de Janeiro, Brazil winning six different club championships. One of his most notable accomplishments was coaching the Supergasbras Club team in 1985 and 1986 to undefeated seasons and back-to-back wins at the Brazilian National Championship in the women’s division.
In 1988, Marcondes moved to Reno, Nev., where he was both a player and coach for the Sparks Volleyball Club. By 1990, he took over the University of Nevada-Reno’s Men’s Volleyball club and led the team to a fifth-place ranking in the USA Today Top-25 poll.
He also spent time as an assistant coach with NCAA Division I Oregon (1994-95) and South Carolina’s (1995-96) women’s programs. Marcondes’ most recent coaching stint was with Australia’s Beach National Team in 1999.
A well-known face in the Brazilian coaching ranks, Marcondes has coached 12 different Brazilian Olympians (seven women and five men) including 2000 Gold Medalist Kerry Pottharst and 1996 Gold Medalist Jackie Silva.
