I Puritani
First produced at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris on Jan. 24, 1835, faculty, students and alumni collaborated to bring the opera “I Puritani” to the Barry campus more than a century and a half later.
 First produced at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris on Jan. 24, 1835, faculty, students and alumni collaborated to bring the opera “I Puritani” to the Barry campus more than a century and a half later. The three-act opera by Vincenzo Bellini is rarely performed due to its highly skilled vocal parts, including a strenuous tenor role and a coloratura soprano part. Beverly Coulter, professor of Fine Arts, was featured in the role of Elvira, the part written for a coloratura soprano. In addition to Coulter, the cast of the April 18-22 production also included Barry alum Clayton Matthews ’06 in the role of Georgio. Before each performance, members of the Fine Arts department gave a lecture on the background of the opera, which tells a story of lost love and mistaken identity.
