Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Dr. Emilio Gonzalez, visited Barry’s campus April 10 to speak to the Barry community and call for balance in immigration reform.
Gonzalez, a Miami native, was appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the Senate in December 2005. Gonzalez spoke about immigration policy and reform, gave a review of what his office does and encouraged students to consider careers with his agency.
“We are a great nation not in spite of our immigrants, but because of our immigrants,” he said. “The advantage we have over other countries is that the social glue that holds us together is not based on defined cultural identities, but on common civic principles and ideals and our shared history as a nation.”
As director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Gonzalez leads an organization of more than 15,000 federal and contract employees responsible for the accurate, efficient and secure processing of immigration benefits. |
