Barry Men’s Golfers Finish First

The Barry Men’s Golf Team won its first NCAA Division II national title at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan May 22-25. Senior Hernan Borja led the way. Barry led the field from start to finish, but senior Hernan Borja, who finished second overall with a four-round score of 291 (+7), had to come to the rescue with the tournament on the line at the par-4 18th, sinking a six-foot par putt to seal his team’s victory.

Barry out-dueled a competitive field, edging second-place South Carolina-Upstate by one stroke, third-place Florida Southern by two and fourth-place Columbus State by three. Washburn rounded out the top five, 10 strokes back.

The title is Barry’s seventh in team sports and first in men’s sports. The Buccaneers have three crowns in women’s soccer (1989, 1992 and 1993) and three in women’s volleyball (1995, 2001 and 2004).
