Chiaroscuro

In February, the Barry University Dance Ensemble hosted three productions of Chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro (Italian for light-dark) is a technique of using light and shade in a pictorial representation. Each of the program’s eight dances was designed to highlight the individual style and technique of the dancers, who were dressed in black and white. “Dance can be black or white but there’s always that extra bit of color that makes the difference,” said performer Sandy Cabara. Yvonne Jones Huston was the program’s primary choreographer along with William Crowley, Erin St. John and student choreographer Derice Louis. Houston, an assistant professor of dance, has worked with the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and danced with the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica.
