Nursing Toward Success

The award, shared with Nova Southeastern University’s Nursing Department, is the largest of its kind given to any college or university in Florida. Funds will be used to increase the number of nurses entering the workforce within the next few years.

“This collaborative project between Barry and NSU will immediately increase the number of qualified nursing faculty by increasing the education of those faculty members who do not currently hold the required degree to continue teaching,” said Dr. Pegge Bell, dean of Barry’s Division of Nursing.

Thanks to a partnership with Baptist Health South Florida that has the organization matching grant funds, Barry exceeded the $500,000 it originally asked for. Barry nursing students will also benefit from a $20,000 scholarship and a chance to complete their bachelor’s degree in nursing with classes at Baptist Hospital of Miami.

In an additional note, the Division of Nursing’s May 2007 graduating class received a 96 percent passage rate on the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse test.
