John McFadden ‘08
John McFadden ‘08, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist from Hollywood, Florida, was awarded the 2009 Program Director of the Year by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at a ceremony held in San Diego August 9.
The honor was especially rewarding because it came from his peers, said McFadden, pictured here with Jackie Rowles, the 2008-2009 President and Interim Executive Director of AANA.
“It is humbling to join the long list of distinguished colleagues who were previously named,” he said. “Being an educator is an opportunity to help shape the future. Education not only enhances our own growth, but provides us with the means to provide the best anesthesia care possible to our patients.”
A nurse anesthetist is a registered nurse and advanced practice nurse who has acquired additional education to administer anesthesia. The Program Director of the Year Award, established in 1991, is presented to a CRNA who has made a significant contribution to the educational process of student nurse anesthetists.
In addition to winning the award, McFadden was appointed chair of the AANA Practice Committee in 2008. The committee is responsible for reviewing the practice of nurse anesthesia, including work environment, practice management, and patient safety.
McFadden, who serves as the associate dean and chair of the Barry University Division of Graduate Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, uses the annual AANA conference as an opportunity to bring together past Barry students. Each year he hosts an alumni party and this year’s event on August 10 brought together nearly 50 people, including faculty, students and alumni from states such as Michigan, Alaska, North Carolina and Florida. |
