The Doral Golf Resort and Spa played host January 10 to the 2009 Barry University Founders’ Ball. Themed “Denim & Diamonds,” the annual event raised more than $190,000 for student scholarships and brought out more than 300 Barry supporters and community leaders. The evening consisted of dinner, dancing, a reception and silent auction.
Hosted by former WPLG TV anchor Dwight Lauderdale, the highlight of the event was the presentation of the Faith and Freedom Awards, which recognizes men and women whose work and actions have embodied the shared religious values of civility, mutual respect and justice while addressing controversial and challenging issues. This year’s Faith and Freedom Award recipients were Norma Quintero, a community leader and editor and chief of Social Affairs magazine, and Paul DiMare, chairman of the Florida Tomato Committee and a leading advocate for Florida farmers and free trade.
Also honored at the event were former Congresswoman Carrie Meek, former U.S. Ambassador Jean Wilkowski, and community leaders Trish Bell and Josie Poitier. These four individuals received the Laudare Medal, which is given as a particular expression of gratitude and appreciation for outstanding community service.
