Barry University Professor of Theology and Director of Graduate Programming Dr. Mary Jo Iozzio has contributed to and co-edited a book titled, “Calling for Justice Throughout the World: Catholic Women Theologians on the HIV/AIDS Pandemic” (Continuum, 2009). Her co-editors were Barry University Assistant Professor of Theology Dr. Elsie Miranda and College of the Holy Cross Professor Dr. Mary Doyle Roche.
A collection of essays from Catholic women theologians in six continents, the authors discuss the economic, personal, social, spiritual and health crises experienced by those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS. They offer ethically framed insights into these experiences as well as practical strategies to address these crises where they work and minister. Iozzio recruited women from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, North America and South America to address issues surrounding the pandemic and its effect on large swatches of the world’s population. She recruited these women after attending the First International Cross-cultural Conference for Catholic Theological Ethicists in Padua, Italy in 2006.
The book is a follow-up to the 2000 “Catholic Ethicists on HIV/AIDS Prevention,” edited by James Keenan, S.J. (Continuum). Iozzio hopes that the collection will keep the concerns of people living with HIV/AIDS and those who care for them in the forefront of discussions on social justice. |
