SMART Ride

It is more than 165 miles from Miami to Key West - miles that are a long drive in a car, let alone by bicycle. Yet, several Barry community members came together November 14-15 to bike the distance, raising more than $10,000 for charities that benefit those affected by or are at-risk for contracting HIV/AIDS. All of the proceeds from the Southernmost AIDS/HIV Ride (SMART) go to six direct service organizations in Florida.
For the first time, the university was represented in the event by “Team Barry,” made up of alumnus Thomas Doll, Senior Director for Graduate Admissions Dave Fletcher, and friends Gerald Judd and Linda Marino.
In addition to those riding, several other members of the Barry community helped with the ride by working for the crew. Don Slone, clinical instructor for the Master of Science in Anesthesiology program, Barry student Eugene Budzonsky and Carol Clothier, assistant dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, all volunteered to help with the two-day ride.
It is the fifth SMART ride for Fletcher, who has been participating in charity rides for HIV/AIDS since 1999. In the past eight years, he has raised more than $35,000 for the cause.
