Men's tennis takes second place at NCAA tourney

Barry University's men's tennis team fell just short of repeating as NCAA Division II champions, as the Buccaneers fell, 5-2, to Valdosta State in the title match.
Freshman Romain Costamagna gave the Buccaneers their lone win in singles action, defeating Otto Lenhart, 6-1, 6-3. Barry's lone doubles win came courtesy of No. 3 Sergio Velez and Ollie Lemaitre.
The runner-up finish is the fifth all-time for the Buccaneers. Most recently, they were runners-up in 2008 and 2009 before beating Valdosta State last season, 5-4, in the national championship match. The Bucs finished the season with a 22-8 overall record.
"We gave it a great run, unfortunately we just couldn't finish against a very good, very strong Valdosta team," Barry head coach Dr. George Samuel said. "I'm proud of all our student-athletes, though – especially the seniors [Emanuel Fraitzl, Simon Raagaard, and Sergio Velez], who helped guide this team to many successes during their years at Barry, including a national championship." |
