When Dinosaurs Ruled

  • Generally offered once a year
  • Taught by Jeremy Montague, Ph.D., SNHS 305
    (jmontague@mail.barry.edu )
  • Three credit hours.two hours of lecture + two hours of lab per week
  • The dinosaurs represent excellent models for the exploration of vertebrate anatomy, physiology and behavior
  • The classification of the dinosaurs has been controversial, and the sorting of species into appropriate taxa presents an intriguing challenge
  • There is enormous controversy and debate among scientists concerning the fate of the dinosaurs: were they victims of celestial catastrophes, or were there factors closer to earth?
  • Come and learn about these fascinating animals!

Dinosaur News:

Let Dr. Montague show you some dinosaur body parts:

  • Dr. Jeremy Montague created a file of color coded body parts
  • The meat-eating theropods are color coded in red
  • The plant-eating sauropodomorphs are color coded in blue
  • The plant-eating ornthischians are color-coded in green

Dr. Montague’s Dinosaur Database:

Dr. Jeremy Montague spent 250 hours of his sabbatical leave during Fall 2005 on an internet-based search for dinosaur data. Scouring dozens of websites and online databases, he collected information on over 1,000 genera of extinct Mesozoic reptiles. The result? His own spreadsheet database containing bibliographic references, taxonomic classifications, fossil locations, geological ages, and estimates of body lengths and weights for over 600 kinds of dinosaurs. Dr. Montague also completed an extensive analysis of body mass index (BMI) values for his dinosaurs to be published soon in the peer-reviewed research journal Florida Scientist.
