Barry’s Nicole Schtupak-Zernitsky named Outstanding Physician Assistant

The PAper has recognized Barry University’s Nicole Schtupak-Zernitsky, a 2012 Biology graduate from Barry’s College of Arts and Sciences, as its outstanding physician assistant (PA) for the spring edition. Schtupak-Zernitsky, an adjunct professor in Barry University’s Physician Assistant Program, works full time at Cleveland Clinic Florida in the Emergency Department and Critical Care flight team, part time at Bethesda-Baptist in the Emergency Department, and serves FAPA as the South regional director.

Schtupak-Zernitsky worked as a sonographer for 14 years before deciding to become a PA, a decision she made so that she could have a greater impact on the lives of patients. While Schtupak-Zernitsky originally wanted to specialize in gynecology, she ended up specializing in emergency medicine.

When asked what she enjoys most about being an emergency medicine PA, Schtupak-Zernitsky told The PAper it was “helping those who come through my doors, who have been other places and have not been able to figure out what is ailing them. I have been so fortunate to help so many who were searching years for answers. Sharing those intimate moments with my patients is what makes all the difference for me. Being there as an ear or a voice for them and seeing the gratitude in their eyes is why I do what I do.”

Schtupak-Zernitsky’s passion doesn’t end with her patients — it extends through her exemplary service to PA students. She has served as a PA student mentor and served as a student member on the admission board for Barry University. She currently mentors 19 pre-PAs and travels across Florida speaking to pre-PA organizations about her experiences as a PA and to share with students about the journey that lies ahead. Schtupak-Zernitsky also serves as an emergency medicine preceptor for PA students. She was recognized earlier this year with the AAPA PA Student Mentor Award.
