Ana M. Jimenez, Ph.D. (University of Miami), is conducting laboratory research on mouse auditory function as a model for the effects of advanced age and noise exposure on the human ear. In order to better understand the mechanism(s) of age- and/or noise-induced hearing loss, she is concentrating on the function of the very sensitive outer hair cells of the organ of Corti by using distortion-product otoacoustic emissions, a non-invasive technique presently used in clinical settings.
