Progression to Major Courses

Admission to the University does not automatically guarantee your progression to (permission to take) upper-division courses in the BSW program. All social work majors must make application for progression to their major courses.

You will make your application for progression at the end of your sophomore year (60 credit-hours) or as part of the admission process (if you are a transfer student with a minimum of 60 credits).

The following criteria are used to assess your application for progression to upper-division BSW courses:

  • Completion of Social Work 201 (Introduction to Social Work) with a minimum grade of 2.70;
  • Attainment of a 2.00 grade point average (GPA), “C,” in courses taken in the social and behavioral science block;
  • Completion of at least 30 hours of the course work applicable to social work, including Sociology 201 and Psychology 281, with at least a 2.00 GPA, “C”;
  • Attainment of a 2.50 GPA in all course work completed at Barry or a 2.70 GPA for transfer credit;
  • Submission of the Request for Progression to Major Courses form.

Occasional exceptions to this progression policy are made on a case-by-case basis. When such exceptions are granted, applicants are clearly informed of the gate-keeping procedures for progression into upper-division courses.
