What Will I Do in the BSW Program?

What Will I Do in the Bachelor of Social Work Program? You will prepare for successful social work practice!

This Bachelor of Social Work program will involve taking courses in the liberal arts and in professional social work. It will also involve  volunteering and  working in a yearlong field placement in diverse, dynamic South Florida.

And when you graduate, you will have the strong practice skills and the academic background needed to truly make a difference!

Liberal Arts Background. To give you a full liberal arts background, with excellent critical thinking and the communication skills, you will take 45 credits from five different curricular divisions:

  • Theology and Philosophy
  • Written and Oral Communication
  • Physical or Natural Sciences and Mathematics
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Humanities

Barry's course selection is broad; in fact, there may be too many courses that seem appealing!

BSW Curriculum. Your BSW course work will build on this solid liberal arts base. You will complete an additional nine credits in the Human and Behavioral Sciences curricular area.

Professional Social Work Education. Upon completing this foundation, you will apply for progression into professional social work education.  Your study will cover nine interrelated content areas:

  • Human Behavior in the Social Environment
  • Social Welfare Policy
  • Social Work Research
  • Social Work Values and Ethics, Diversity
  • Social and Economic Justice
  • Populations-at-risk
  • Social Work Practice
  • Field Education

This content is included in discrete, required courses and is integrated throughout the curriculum, thereby reinforcing your learning experience.

You will complete 13 social work courses (39 credits) within the major. You will take two of these courses during your first or sophomore years. The remaining 11 courses are taken during your junior and senior years.

Your junior year will include a 75-hour volunteer experience, along with your first practice course. Your senior year will include a yearlong field placement of 480 hours and three practice courses. Since you will take practice and field courses concurrently, your course content will be integrated and reinforced with actual practice.
