Alumni on the Move
Angelo F Rolle
Rising through the Ranks in Finance
A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Angelo Rolle is living a life he might not have imagined 20 years ago. Now a husband and father of two, the Barry School of Business alum studied and worked in a variety of finance-related fields before joining HLB Gravier, LLP, as an audit manager. The firm is among the best in South Florida. "I love working here," said Rolle, who spoke with the Barry School of Business about his journey to his dream job.
Rolle credits his days at Barry with sparking his success. "As a direct result of my MBA with a concentration in Finance from Barry, I was able to obtain a job as a credit analyst at Ocean Bank." This early position garnered him the experience he had been craving, but knew he couldn’t get from his bachelor’s degree alone.
"My undergraduate degree was in Business Administration (Management), which had no specialty," he said. He was living in Miami when he began considering business school. "I researched all the universities in Miami to determine which ones were accredited by the AACSB." Not only was Barry accredited, but the school also offered Rolle a partial scholarship based on his GMAT score and undergraduate GPA. The choice was easy. Rolle entered the MBA program with a concentration in Finance.
Rolle remembers his courses and professors fondly. "I really liked the finance class with Dr. Morrell," he said. "Our class came up with a financial model that aided us in predicting Google’s price per share during their IPO." Such real-world practices are vital to career preparation, according to Rolle, who advises Barry MBA applicants to consider working in a corporate setting prior to enrollment. Any opportunity to apply scholarly learnings to an actual job is ideal, he said. "I realized this when I went back to school to obtain an accounting degree, five years after earning my MBA at Barry. I was able to apply what I was learning in the classroom to my job at the bank."
After passing Florida’s CPA exam and working his way through the ranks at HLB Gravier, Rolle is in a position to mentor new talent. When he considers applicants to the firm, he looks for enthusiasm and self-awareness, "someone who is eager to learn and know themselves well enough to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and wise enough to know how to manage them both to maximize their potential."
