Study Abroad and International Internships |
Getting Started |
Plan well in advance
Meet with Dr. Tejeda, Director of International Business Programs early in the semester prior to your planned trips. |
Meet with your advisor and review your program requirements. At this time also review what courses you need and match that with your anticipated graduation date.
For Study Abroad, most universities have very strict deadlines and require that you apply on time for your program.
For internships, make sure you have an updated resume and be ready to provide a translated copy. Also, be prepared to give an employer a brief essay about you and your interests.
Admission and Application Requirements.
Barry University students are considered guest or exchange students for a semester at their host institution. Nevertheless, you need to complete an application process that includes the following: |
Filling an application form provided by the college. It could be either in paper or electronic form, depending on the college.
Requesting and submitting a transcript from Barry. You may want to request it early as it usually takes a week or so to process. The fee for a transcript is $5.
An application fee which varies depending on the school of your choice. Usually this fee will be non-refundable.
Passport photos.
An essay or answers to questions about your reasons for studying abroad, if required.
Proof of health insurance or the willingness to purchase the host institution's health insurance plan.
Your choice of residence. Remember that residence halls are less common outside of the US. You may need to reside with a host family or locate short-term housing.
Organize your Finances and Registration
Students who study abroad register for BUS-443 for the number of credits they will be doing abroad. Registering for a minimum number of credits may be required by the host institution (the university where you will be studying). |
If you receive financial aid from Barry University, be sure you let Dr. Tejeda know ahead of time to request a reimbursement and/or a transfer from your account.
Students who are eligible for Federal Stafford loans may be able to obtain financing for the cost of studying abroad. This financing requires that you be a full-time student.
Look at costs beyond tuition: housing at the host institution or in home stay, board, airplane tickets, any excursions you might want, other local travel, and personal expenses.
Organize Travel Plans and Requirements
If you are planning to study in a country whose language you do not speak fluently, be sure to have at least an intermediate or higher level of the language to make the experience meaningful. |
Do not leave your travel plans until the end or you will find yourself buying an incredibly overpriced airfare. Book your flight early. Some programs offer charter flights so be sure you sign up early to reserve your place.
Review the visa requirements for the foreign destination based on your citizenship. The requirements for countries will vary and some nations require the purchase of a visa well in advance. A valid visa to enter your host country.
If necessary, review and obtain any work authorization requirements. Do not risk your stay by working illegally.
Make sure you have a valid passport and that the date of expiration on your passport is 6 months after the date of your scheduled return.
