Barry University accounting professor, Michael A. Broihahn, is the co-author of a new book titled, “International Financial Statement Analysis.”

The book is part of a Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) Institute Investment Series whose lead co-author, Thomas R. Robinson, PhD, is managing director for the educational division of CFA Institute, a global, non-profit association of investment professionals. According to Robinson, Broihahn brought a “wealth of knowledge and experience” to the project thanks to his “expertise and credentials” in both accounting and financial analysis. He went on to say Broihahn “added greatly to making this book a key resource” for investment professionals.

“It was an honor to work on a book that will help finance professionals better understand international standards for accounting policies in companies throughout the world,” said Broihahn, who worked on the book over the course of two years.

The book seeks to help professionals in the finance world better understand international financial accounting policies and also serve as a text for students studying the profession. The challenge for many is being able to compare domestic companies with ones overseas on an equal playing field or compare policies “apples to apples.” This book, the author’s hope, will make that process simpler.

“The book is a primer on how to analyze financial statements from the perspective of an investor or creditor,” said Robinson. “It goes beyond traditional accounting books which tend to focus on preparers of financial statements for a particular country, it covers how to understand, compare and analyze financial statements across the globe to gain a better perspective on the financial health of a company.

Professor Broihahn received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration and Master of Science degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Florida and Wisconsin, and holds the professional credentials of Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified in Financial Management (CFM), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Certified Fund Specialist (CFS). Broihahn also earned a Graduate Gemologist Diploma from the Gemological Institute of America.

Dr. Charles Rarick, professor of management at Barry University’s Andreas School of Business, has been awarded the Fulbright Senior Specialists grant in business administration. The grant is awarded by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State, and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. As a recipient of the Fulbright grant, Dr. Rarick will spend a two-term session in Myanmar, Burma giving a series of lectures on free-trade, privatization, management, and strategic planning to Myanmar’s business community. Dr. Rarick’s first-term will be Oct. 1-26 and his second-term will be Dec. 1-14. He will be joining the ranks of other distinguished scholars and professionals from around the world who are leaders in the educational, political, economic, social and cultural lives of their respective countries. The Fulbright grant is financed by the U.S. and the numerous other governments that participate in the Fulbright program. The basic purpose of these grants is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries.
