MLK Day of Service
Saturday, January 19, 2013
Join us for MLK Day 2013! This year, Barry University will be working at four different service sites across Miami, with an emphasis on military veterans and their families, youth, and community revitalization. The vision is that through the MLK Day of Service, Dr. King’s legacy may continue to live in “Communities of Peace” of ongoing service and nonviolence at Barry University and surrounding area.
Participants will have the option of choosing one of the following events:
- Barry University; - College Readiness Day for local high school students and their families including Financial Aid 101, College Application Process, and a field day.
- Miami Dade Parks and Recreation - Key Biscayne park revitalization, specifically working with dune restoration.
- Nininger State Veterans' Nursing Home; Thank-a-Veteran, where we will spend time with the residents as well as revive the facility.
- La Paloma; Neighborhood revitalization, which will include planting, painting and trash clean-up.
To register, log in and search for “MLK Day.”
While we will do our best to accommodate all site requests, because of size restrictions, you are not guaranteed a spot at your preferred location. The sooner you register, the more likely you will get a spot. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ashli Van Horn via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or 305-899-3632. Participants will not be able to pick their location on the day of the event.
All participants will receive a free t-shirt and lunch.
“Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve... You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love...” -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
