Activities
Prayer & Faith Sharing: You will have the opportunity to participate in several communal prayer activities during the course of the week, from praying the Rosary to quiet meditation with members of various faiths.
Pax Christi: By joining the
Barry University Pax Christi Chapter, you can help create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating, and witnessing to the call of Christian nonviolence. Barry's Chapter has been exploring issues surrounding consumerism, materialism, and Christian Spirituality. Through presentations, discussions, and prayer, the Chapter has addressed the relationships between economic perspectives and social justice.
Community Service: You can get involved with a
variety of service opportunities in the local community and
throughout the world. Working in conjunction with the Volunteer
Office, Campus Ministry supports a variety of options on campus and
with social justice organizations such as Habitat for Humanity or Pax Christi. There are ways
to help build a better world and, in so doing, help create the
Kingdom of God in our midst. To get information on service
opportunities, call 305-899-3088.
Retreats: Ever thought about attending an online retreat? You can at Barry. We do all we can to help you fit prayer and fellowship into your busy daily schedule. One of our recent weekend retreat
off-line experiences, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Miami, was held in conjunction with several local universities, giving
participants a number of people with whom to converse.
Habitat for Humanity: In conjunction with Barry's own campus chapter, Campus Ministry helps support the Habitat for Humanity program.
On September 13, 2003, Barry students began work on the first-ever university co-sponsored Habitat for Humanity house in South Florida. Students, faculty, and staff made trips every Saturday to work at the building site. On January 17, 2004, this four-bedroom home was dedicated by
former Barry President Sr. Jeanne O'Laughlin, OP, Ph.D.; Riva Perryman and her five children moved in shortly thereafter. Get involved as the Chapter starts collecting the funds needed to sponsor its second house. Visit Barry's Habitat website or email habitat@mail.barry.edu .
Mission Effectiveness Luncheons: Do you know the importance greetings hold in the Haitian community? How about the differences between Catholic and Jewish views on cloning? If these topics interest you, consider joining with other Barry students, faculty, and staff for lunch and lively discussions as we explore the many issues that face us as a community and examine how we, as community, can better live out the mission.
Mission Presentations: Presentations on the Dominican mission
are sometimes given during one of
your classes. Covering the history and tradition of the Dominican order, as well as the history of the Adrian Dominican sisters and the founding of
Barry University, these presentations are designed to help you and other students understand the values and traditions upon which the University was built.
Food Drive: You may want to assist us with the annual Thanksgiving Food Collection. Contributions from individuals and/or
departments within the University provide Thanksgiving meals and
staples for families whose children attend a local school.
For each of the past ten years, we have provided food gift boxes and grocery gift certificates for 20 families.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
(RCIA): RCIA is a course of instruction for adults seeking initiation into the Catholic Church. If you have never been baptized or you were baptized (in any Christian faith) but did not receive your First Communion and/or have not been confirmed,
RCIA will guide you in your spiritual journey. It is a journey of prayer, inquiry, instruction, reflection, and, most of all, spiritual growth. Instruction begins in mid-September and culminates at the Easter Vigil Mass during which you
are invited into full communion with Catholic Church.
World AIDS Day: In an effort to support AIDS education and awareness, Campus Ministry, in association with several other campus organizations, sponsors a World AIDS Day event with speakers and various activities.
Bagel Hour: Each month, Campus Ministry invites the whole community to join together for bagels and coffee. Drop
in at this mini-open house and experience some breakfast treats and community fellowship.
Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: Every year the Barry Community celebrates the life and tremendous impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In mid-January, Campus Ministry hosts a memorial celebration that includes prayer, performance, and song. This past January, we also included a number of readings from Dr. King's theological and activist reflections with a presentation depicting the marches, struggles, victories, and tragedies of his life and times.
Prism: Unlike many Christian denominations, Catholicism respects the fact that homosexuality is not a chosen "lifestyle," but rather a bio-psychological orientation, and like any and every human person, the homosexual individual is "called to fulfill God's will" in his or her life.
Campus Ministry and Student Affairs, through Prism, provides
pastoral outreach and counseling to the gay/lesbian community on campus, who together with their family and friends, attempt to discover the work of God in their lives.
Sponsored Events & Trips: Join us on a number of trips or events held throughout the academic year. Our recent trips included the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art for an enjoyable tour of
"Saint Peter and the Vatican : The Legacy of the Popes."
