The goal of Career Services is to encourage each student to take personal responsibility to utilize the center’s services to develop his or her career planning skills from freshman through senior year and beyond. Additionally, we teach students skills necessary to accomplish successful career searches and career progression. We are dedicated to meeting student’s needs and are open to individualizing services. Career Services is a comprehensive unit that assists students in a variety of ways throughout their college career and after graduation. Career Counselors are available to provide counseling and assistance regarding career development to students, and alumni, in accordance with the University’s mission imperative of a caring environment. Career counseling is available on a scheduled appointment basis.

Career Counseling is an individual professional assistance in developing and exploring your academic and career options. By self-assessment and working with a counselor, you can determine your interests, values, personality, skills, and expectations, and how they align with different careers.
Career Services offers two online assessments that assist students in making decisions regarding career choices. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Strong Interest Inventory can assist in clarifying appropriate career paths. These assessment tools are offered at a minimal fee and can be set up by appointment or faculty and student groups can have whole classes or organizations take the assessments.
Students often wonder how taking a career assessment can help. When individuals want assistance in choosing a major or career, the Strong Interest Inventory provides a summary of basic interest scales, descriptions of personal work style and a list of specific occupations that might interest the student. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) provides a summary of results, including the effects of preference on career choice with the 50 most popular and 25 least popular occupations for the reported type.
The Strong Interest Inventory is designed to help students learn about their interests and how they compare to people who enjoy working in a variety of occupations. Discovering one’s interests and how they match with others who are already in specific career fields may assist in defining a successful career path, selecting classes or campus activities, or choosing a major.
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator can assist in determining a student’s strengths and preferences for work environment. It is important to understand where one’s preferences lie in order to search for an occupation that best fits a certain personality type. Career Counselors are available to interpret the results of this assessment. Additionally, student groups and organizations find the MBTI to be a useful tool in assisting the group to work together as a team and appreciate the differences in each member.
Resume/Cover Letter Assistance
The Career Services staff assists students as they develop a professional resume and appropriate cover letters. We encourage students to begin working on these important documents during their first year at Barry so that they are well prepared when they begin to seek internships or full-time positions.
Our annual Career Guide outlines the information that should be included in a cover letter and resume. Students can pick up their copy of the Career Guide in our office, Landon 205. Once students complete a draft of their resume, we encourage them to bring it in for review. Students may also upload their resume to our online job search system, eBUC$. Once a staff member has approved the resume, students are able to apply online for positions listed specifically for Barry University students and alumni. They can also give access to employers to search for their resume.
An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent. - National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)

Interview Preparation/Mock Interviews
Career Services works with students preparing for job or internship interviews. Students are able to set up a time to work with a counselor who can help them become familiar and more comfortable with the essential elements of an interview. We encourage students to schedule a mock interview prior to their first interview. During mock interviews, a counselor will ask questions related to the student’s resume and experience. Upon completion of the question and answer period, the counselor will offer feedback on how the student can improve upon any weaknesses shown during the interview.
Furthermore, Career Services offers workshops on the interviewing process that assist students in learning more about the do's and don'ts of an interview. Workshops can be scheduled for specific classes or student organizations.
Our annual Career Guide provides students with information on preparing for interviews, dressing for success, and most importantly, sample questions that might be asked during that dream job interview! Career Guides are available to students in the Career Center, Landon 205.

Employer Contacts Referral
Career Counselors and Employer Relations Coordinator can provide students with contact information of recruiters if they believe that the students would be an excellent fit for the referred organization and an outstanding candidate for the job opportunity.
