With the increasing availability of the internet and ever evolving technology many alumni prefer to rely on the internet as the basis of their job search.

The difference Career Services can provide is that of career development. We strive to teach alumni skills that will assist them in their life long career journey. Utilizing the internet is just one source – Barry’s Career Services helps to get you on the path to developing your career by utilizing the following resources:

Career Counseling
Career counseling is available to alumni seeking assistance in career development and planning. Individuals may schedule appointments to discuss a variety of career related issues such as:

• Job search techniques
• Resume, cover letter, other job search assistance
• Graduate and Professional School application processes
• Career Fair preparation

Regardless of where you are in your career planning, our counselors will assist in developing a plan to discover and reach agreed upon career goals.

Career Assessments
CareerBeam, a comprehensive, 24/7, virtual component to Career Services is available to alumni to help determine what they want in a career and offers the steps to achieve it. It is a self-paced process to help clarify career goals, develop a professional resume and cover letter, prepare for interviews, develop a network, and implement a strategic career search.

Career Services also offers two paper-based assessments that assist in making decisions regarding career choices. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Strong Interest Inventory can assist in clarifying appropriate career paths. These assessment tools are offered at a minimal fee and can be set up by appointment.
You may be wondering how taking a career assessment can help. When individuals want assistance in choosing a career, the Strong Interest Inventory provides a summary of basic interest scales, descriptions of personal work style and a list of specific occupations that might interest the student. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) provides a summary of results, including the effects of preference on career choice with the 50 most popular and 25 least popular occupations for the reported type.
The Strong Interest Inventory is designed to help you learn about your interests and how they compare to people who enjoy working in a variety of occupations.  Discovering one’s interests and how they match with others who are already in specific career fields may assist in defining a successful career path. 
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator can assist in determining your strengths and preferences for work environment.  It is important to understand whereyour preferences lie in order to search for an occupation that best fits a certain personality type.  Career Counselors are available to interpret the results of this assessment. 

Resume and Cover Letter Assistance
The Career Services staff assists alumni as they develop a professional resume and appropriate cover letters. We encourage you to continuously work on these important documents you are well prepared when you begin your next job search.
Our annual Career Guide outlines the information that should be included in a cover letter and resume. Career Guides are available on the main campus in Landon 105. If you are not in the local area and would like a Career Guide, please contact Career Services and we can mail it to you. Once you complete a draft of their resume, we encourage you to bring it in for review. You may also upload you resume to our online job search system, eBUC$. Once a staff member has approved the resume, you are able to apply online for positions listed specifically for Barry University students and alumni. They can also give access to employers to search for their resume.

Interview Preparation
Career Services works with individuals preparing for job or internship interviews. As an alumnus, you are able to set up a time to work with a counselor who can help you become familiar and more comfortable with the essential elements of an interview. We encourage you to schedule a mock interview prior to your first interview. During mock interviews, a counselor will ask questions related to your resume and experience. Upon completion of the question and answer period, the counselor will offer feedback on how you can improve upon any weaknesses shown during the interview.
Our annual Career Guide provides information on preparing for interviews, dressing for success, and most importantly, sample questions that might be asked during that dream job interview! Career Guides are available through Career Services.

Job Postings
Career Services has both full-time and part-time career-related job and internship postings available specifically for the students and alumni of Barry University via eBUC$, a national job posting site that allow students and alumni to post their resumes online and search for both local and national positions. eBUC$ works with employers from many industries and geographic regions, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses. This system enables employers from around the world to post open positions, as well as search for qualified candidates by reviewing their resumes.

On Campus Interviews
Career Services provides you with opportunities throughout the academic year to interview with organizations that come to campus specifically to recruit Barry students and alumni. Throughout each semester, our office advertises these opportunities in advance so you can sign up and submit your resume prior to the interview day.

Graduate School, Medical School, or Law School
As you think about continuing your education with graduate, medical, or law school, you can visit Career Services for assistance in choosing an institution, completing the application process and creating a personal statement. Counselors are available to assist alumni in decisions ranging from what to pursue an advanced degree in to where to apply.
