At the Heart of 21st Century Learning: Conference on the Future of Education

More than 300 private and public school teachers and over 600 students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered on Barry University’s campus February 18, 2011 for the first Teacher Professional Development Conference titled, At the Heart of 21st Century Learning, facilitated by the Community Learning Partnership of Greater Miami Shores (CLP). The morning events of the conference included New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-selling author Daniel Pink speaking on how to prepare our children for their future and not our past. His keynote presentation was followed by a Q&A moderated by Helen Aguirre Ferré, Barry Alumna and host of the public affairs program Issues on WPBT- Channel 2 in Miami. The afternoon continued with 35 breakout sessions offered by Barry faculty and local educators.

President Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD introduced the morning by sharing the purpose and responsibility universities, schools, and communities have in educating our students in the face of global and economic realities.  She explained that, “Universities and schools are uniquely situated within their communities to serve as catalysts for constructive change and engagement through mutually beneficial partnerships, and for that reason, the Barry community embraces that role enthusiastically.”

As one of the original partners of the CLP, Barry has assisted with fostering collaboration among local K-12 public and private schools, the university, and the community. This Conference flows from one of the original reasons the partnership was formed three years ago- to create opportunities for meaningful, professional interaction among educators, to share best practices, faculty expertise and other community and educational resources.
