Dr. Margaret Chojnacki has been an Assistant Professor of Communication at Barry University since 2005. She teaches courses in Public Speaking, Intercultural Communication, and Research Methods. Her research interests focus on intercultural conflict resolution. Specifically, she uses game theory to model social evolution due to cultural bargaining strategy and negotiation behaviors. She has previously taught at the University at Buffalo and Niagara University, as well as working for Warner Brothers and freelance writing for media in the Buffalo market. Dr. Chojnacki earned her Ph.D. in Communication with a minor in Sociology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Dr. Nickesia Gordon is Assistant Professor of Communication at Barry University. Her current research interest lies in investigating media convergence and its implications for television programming in the Caribbean as well as globalization and media in the Caribbean. She teaches courses in media programming, media management, and television production. Dr. Gordon earned her doctoral degree in Communication and Culture from Howard University in 2007.

Ms. Connie Hicks McMahon has taught at Barry since 2004 as a professional in residence. For twenty five years, she was a television reporter in Minneapolis, Rhode Island and Miami. During those years, she won two Emmys, as well as awards from the Associated Press, the American Bar Association, Lincoln University for minority issues and Crime Stoppers. In the course of her career she produced and anchored the news and reported on riots, hurricanes, death row, public corruption, trials and reported from Cuba and Haiti. She received her BA degree in Sociology and Political Science from Macalester College and is working on her Master’s degree. Her interest is in broadcast news, reporting and writing.

Dr. Katherine Nelson teaches courses in interpersonal communication, business and professional communication, and public speaking. Her research in codependence has been recognized among those in the area of family communication and her current research centers on the effect of addiction on interpersonal and family relationships. She earned the Ph.D. at Arizona State University.

Dr. Rise Samra specializes in Public Relations communication. Her professional interests include rhetorical analysis of the speech making process and Public Relations case studies and campaigns. Her research includes work in assessment of Public Relations curricula, image making in the health care industry, and international Public Relations. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Arizona.

Mahen Saverimuttu specializes in Advertising and Public Relations. His professional experience in the strategic planning and managing of international advertising accounts, as well as in journalism, compliments his academic credentials. His research interests concern the role of advertising in the socialization of adolescents and the effects of media on immigrants.

Dr. Pawena Sirimangkala is Associate Professor of Communication at Barry University. She earned her doctorate degree in Communication with a specialty in Intercultural Communication from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, in 1993. Her research has been primarily aimed at explaining the role of communication in the intercultural communication relational process. She has conducted research among African Americans, Asians, European Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans in the United States. During her 2-year faculty appointment at the University of Arizona, she wrote a book chapter on Listening in Intercultural Context and conducted intercultural communication workshops for the staff and student populations. She teaches courses on communication theory, communication research, intercultural communication, conflict management, communication and technology, and leadership. Besides researching on intercultural related topics, she is a facilitator and workshop presenter in intercultural communication for corporations and public institutions in the United States.

Dr. Denis E. Vogel serves as department chair and teaches courses in communication law, media production, and media programming. His research interests center on media effects, particularly in international settings. He has been active in study abroad programs in Mexico and Italy, and is currently co-director of the Communication Department's study abroad program in Thailand. He earned the Ph.D. from the College of Communication at Florida State University.
