About the Program

Thank you for your interest in the Communication Studies program at Barry University. The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies is a broadly-based program designed for those students who seek a generalist’s orientation to the communication discipline. Students are encouraged to investigate all aspects of the program, developing a core of knowledge in communication studies, and applying general elective hours to the minor in order to create a double major. We offer a comprehensive curriculum designed to produce outstanding graduates who are not only equipped with the tools to enter many professions, but who are also endowed with the critical knowledge-based skills vital for success in the workplace.

Drawing on classical tradition as well as on contemporary behavioral sciences, Communication Studies focuses on how people arrive at shared meanings through an interchange of messages, or, in other words, the symbolic process through which meaning and social reality are created.

Communication Studies originated from the older disciplines of rhetoric and public oration, but today this major studies messages—whether oral, written, or nonverbal—in the context of face-to-face and mediated communication. Our majors’ curriculum produce communicators who are highly effective at critically analyzing communication, thereby preparing them for life as enlightened citizens and professionals in a variety of career paths such as business, education, law, politics, media, social service, and the ministry.

Communication Studies majors are required to enroll in an internship. As an international business center, Greater Miami offers a myriad of internships. Internships are available in public relations; advertising; journalism; broadcast production; tourism; the cruise line industry; marketing for international hotels, hospitals, and health agencies; retail; sales; political communication; governmental agencies; and non-profit organizations, just to name a few.

Several Communication Studies interns have worked in Washington, D.C. over the summer. Our bilingual students frequently seek internships at Telemundo or PR/Advertising firms that require excellence in at least two languages.
