Broadcast Communication

A degree in Broadcast Communication opens a world of opportunity in broadcast and multi-media fields. As a Broadcast Communication major you will learn to report, write, anchor, produce, direct, and edit for radio, television, and the Internet – and even prepare for a career as a network executive.

Our students take a balance of courses that instill a solid background in media writing, reporting and production. Courses offer the fundamentals of understanding the mass media, theories of communication and media ethics.

We also offer hands on classes which emphasize producing and anchoring a newscast, writing and producing a web newscast, and learning the skills for radio and television reporting. Another concentration focuses on production, editing, studio and field work, and television directing. To broaden your knowledge of the mass media in all fields, courses are offered in media programming, media management and communication law.

Students will also have the opportunity to produce a half hour public affairs show that is aired throughout the state of Florida and produce, anchor and report for a weekly broadcast news show.

Our on-campus state-of-the-art television facility, The David Brinkley Studio, provides students the opportunity to develop valuable production techniques. The studio includes: SDI digital switcher, digital audio board, four studio cameras with teleprompter, six editing suites available for post-production,10 field cameras, lighting kits and tripods.

For students interested in the field of radio, WBRY Radio, the campus station, is run by Barry students, who fill positions as station manager, promotion and sales director, as well as hosting various music and public affairs shows.

At Barry, our students are required to participate in at least one internship program, which gives students the chance to see and experience the real world of broadcast media in English and Spanish. Internships provide a valuable transitional step into the world of professional media and our location in Miami, the 16th largest media market in the country, can lead to invaluable contacts and even job offers both here and around the country.
