Dr. M. Sylvia Fernandez elected Chair of CACREP Board

Effective July 1, 2012, Dr. M. Sylvia Fernandez began a two-year term as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The vision of CACREP is to provide leadership and to promote excellence in professional preparation, at both the Master’s- and Doctoral-levels, through the development of standards and procedures that reflect the needs of a dynamic, diverse, and complex society.

The value of CACREP accreditation is that it is the recognized training standard for professional counselors by the Institute of Medicine, Tri-Care, and the Veteran’s Administration; it promotes counselor professional identity; its curricula content areas are the required academic training for counselor licensure in most states making CACREP-accreditation a pathway to licensure portability; and it is recognized and attained by approximately 600 programs in the North American continent.

Dr. Fernandez began her 5-year term on the Board on July 1, 2010. She has a long history with CACREP to include being a CACREP site-team member reviewing programs across the country for 15 years; her last faculty position, prior to Barry University, was also in a CACREP-accredited program; and she holds a doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited program.

Barry University’s Master in Counseling specializations in Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling were first accredited in 1995, followed by Marital, Couple, Family Counseling/Therapy in 2000, and the Ph.D. in Counseling in 2009. All counseling programs were last reviewed in January 2011 and were re-accredited, once again demonstrating that the Counseling programs meet the national preparation standards of the counseling profession.
