Barry University's School of Education sponsors several student organizations designed to assist you in your professional development. As you will see, some are chapters of national professional organizations; others are specific to Barry University. Most are associated with a degree program or area of study. To assist you further, we have also listed on this page a number of professional organizations along with links to their websites should you have interest in joining them.
American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) Student Chapter
Students in Barry's graduate Organizational Learning and Leadership program will find membership in this chapter to be a great assist in their professional development. The chapter is one of only two Student ASTD Chapters in the U.S. As noted on the ASTD website, "ASTD chapters provide local networking and professional development opportunities for training, HRD, and performance improvement professionals across the United States." The Barry University Counseling Association (BUCA)
BUCA, a student-run organization, provides students and alumni the opportunity to network at social events and, to gain information and experience in workshops. BUCA serves as an information resource for students and alumni, providing members with academic and professional information. All currently enrolled students or alumni from the Barry University Counseling Program are invited to join and participate in this organization. In addition to the Miami Shores BUCA Chapter, Barry also has established an Orlando BUCA Chapter. You can get more information on the Orlando chapter at www.bucao.org.
Barry undergraduate and graduate students in education and in any other program may join this organization. Best Buddies is an international non-profit organization, founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver. According to the Best Buddies website, the organization is "dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities." Montessori Book Club
The School of Education's Montessori program hosts a book club that meets monthly during the school year. The monthly meetings provide stimulating discussions on the classic works by Dr. Maria Montessori and are open to faculty, staff, and others in the surrounding community. The book club is one of many opportunities offered by the Montessori program, the only graduate program of its kind in the Southeastern United States.
Chi Sigma Iota - Beta Upsilon Chapter
Chi Sigma Iota is the international honor society in counseling for students, professional counselors, and counselor educators whose mission is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in that profession. There are a total of 284 chapters internationally. Barry's chapter, Chi Sigma Iota - Beta Upsilon, has received multiple awards since 1999 for its Outstanding Newsletter and as an Outstanding Chapter.
Kappa Delta Pi - International Honor Society in Education
According to their website, Kappa Delta Pi "is the only organization that represents all educators - regardless of subject area specialty, degree obtained, grade-level focus, or years of teaching experience...
