College Reach-Out Program (CROP)

The College Reach-Out Program (CROP) was established in 1983 by the Florida Department of Education.  The program motivates and prepares educationally disadvantaged students from low income housing areas. CROP focuses on helping students in grades 6 through 12 to pursue and successfully complete a college education.

79% of our CROP students graduated with a high school diploma, compared to 59% percent of non-CROP students, in the 2005-2006 academic year.

72% of our CROP students also went on to college, whereas only 57% percent of non-CROP did the same academic year.

Barry University’s CROP program provides individual, family, and group therapeutic counseling services to its participants.

PROGRAM SERVICES

Our CROP Program offers various services to enhance and enrich participants academically, personally, socially, and culturally.

  • Individual and Group Counseling to address individual, family, and community barriers which affect personal and academic success.
  • Summer Residential Program provides CROP participants with a college life experience for one week.
  • Tutorial Instruction for FCAT, SAT, and ACT test preparation.
  • Alternative to Suspension Counseling Program serves as a source of early intervention and prevention of repeated suspensions. CROP provides individual, group, and family counseling services to children and their parents within Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
  • Mentoring Program provides middle and high school students the opportunity to be mentored by college students through exposure to college settings and dialogue about college, its barriers, and how to overcome them.
  • Civic Engagement Opportunities allow middle and high school students to contribute, improve, and make a difference in their communities through various activities such as food drives and cleaning parks and beaches.
  • Summer Science Camp engages middle and high school students to focus on science, math, reading, public speaking, and vocabulary skills.  Parents are also invited to a Science Showcase Event where students present their Portfolio.
  • Rhythms of Africa Music Program incorporates a global array of rhythms and sounds to a fun learning experience. Middle and high school students are encouraged to apply their experiences to principles of diversity, teamwork, and academic skills.
  • Workshop that focus on students' curiosity, imagination, investigation, motivation, life skills, parental support, school and community engagement, college educational goals, and career opportunities.
  • College Tours and Field Trips provide students first-hand exposure to colleges, universities, and educational opportunities.
