What is the Counseling Center?

The Counseling Center is a part of the Student Affairs Division. Our major goal is to provide services to students to help them grow and develop emotionally. Individual counseling is offered, as well as small groups that are occasionally formed for mutual support and shared learning.

Who is eligible for Counseling Services?

All currently registered students are eligible for free services. A student who is younger than 18 needs to have parental/guardian consent for therapy.

Consultation and Crisis Intervention?

Any full or part-time undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at Barry University is eligible for a confidential counseling appointment. During this appointment, the counselor and the student will discuss counseling options which may include group, individual, or couple counseling at the Counseling Center or in the community. All services provided by the Counseling Center are confidential and free of charge. The Counseling Center staff is well qualified to deal with emergencies. The Center has 24-hour cell phone coverage for students living on campus. Commuter students are entitled to the same services as residents during the weekday. After hours and on weekends, commuter students in crisis are advised to call the Switchboard of Miami in Dade at 305-358-HELP, or the Crisis Hotline in Broward, "First Call For Help," at 954-467-6333.

How Long is a Session?

Sessions usually last 50 minutes.

How do I Get The Most Out of Counseling?

Think about your overall purpose; be completely honest (otherwise you are wasting your time); be willing to take a close look at yourself ... your attitudes, behaviors, and feelings.

Is this Confidential?

Without a signed release of information from the student/client, the counselor may not discuss any specifics of the student/client’s situation nor confirm whether a student is receiving counseling services.

Confidentiality may be broken to protect the safety of you or others. Exceptions to confidentiality are:

  • a student poses clear and imminent danger to self or another
  • neglect or abuse to the individual or others
  • a court-ordered subpoena that requires the counselor to release information
  • consultation with other counseling staff members for professional purposes
