African-American Storytelling: Share your story Feb. 12

The African-American experience is rich with stories of triumph and tragedy, celebration and sorrow. Come and explore the historical, sociological, and psychological significance of Black storytelling, from Remus to rap.

The presentation will be followed by a storytelling session in which you can share your own stories of growing up Black in America. Enjoy refreshments, prizes, music, and a chance to record your story for public radio! Selected stories will air on Miami public radio WLRN 91.3 FM and will appear on the Public Storyteller website.

About the Presenter

Dr. Caren Neile is a professional storyteller who has taught storytelling studies at Florida Atlantic University since 2000. She has performed, taught, and produced storytelling events throughout the United States and abroad, including as a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Vienna and Jerusalem. Dr. Neile co-hosts the Public Storyteller segment weekly on the WLRN public radio show Folk & Acoustic Music and writes a regular column on storytelling for the Florida Jewish Journal. Her publications include the book The Great American Story.
