Tuesday, Jan. 15 | Deliberative Dialogue: Civil Rights and Social Justice: Have We Come Far Enough?”

Deliberative Dialogue is a forum for working towards a common understanding of social issues, identifying practical solutions, and promoting workable public policy. Wednesday, Jan. 16 | Community Engagement Fair

Come see how you can keep Dr. King’s legacy alive by connecting to the community. The Community Engagement Fair will provide an opportunity for university faculty, staff and students to discuss service-learning, community-based research project ideas, and volunteer opportunities with agency representatives. The community agencies will promote their work, explain their services and recruit volunteers. More than 30 local community agencies are expected to participate including Art Studio Miami; Big Brothers Big Sisters; Food for the Poor; Habitat for Humanity; Miami Theater Center; Strong Women, Strong Girls, Inc.; and Urban Paradise Guild. Thursday, Jan. 17 | Tunnel of Oppression

Tunnel of Oppression is an interactive event that highlights contemporary issues of oppression. It is designed to tear down barriers that divide those who do not recognize oppression and those who live in it. As Tunnel participants move through a series of rooms/areas, they are presented with interactive skits, videos, sounds, images, and role-playing that raise awareness of acts of oppression that exist globally and in our society. It is intended to challenge people’s ideas and perceptions of issues dealing with oppression. Co-sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement. Barry students, faculty and staff are invited to honor Dr. King’s legacy by serving in one of four different sites across Miami, with an emphasis on military veterans and their families, youth, and community revitalization. Monday, Jan. 21 | Beginning of 40 Days of Peace
A 40 Days of Peace campaign will begin inspired by Dr. King’s commitment to nonviolence. Participants will be invited to engage in community projects and peaceful acts through a Peace Pledge, Forgiveness Project, Power of Words project, and letter writing campaign to military veterans. The vision is that through the MLK Day of Service and 40 Days of Peace, Dr. King’s legacy may continue to live in “Communities of Peace” of ongoing service and nonviolence at Barry University and surrounding area.
