PACE, Fla. -- Barry University women's golf team is in third place after one round of the NCAA Division II South Regional hosted by West Florida.

The No. 6-ranked Buccaneers shot 305 in the opening round of the three-day regional at the 6,154-yard Stonebrook Golf Club Sunday. Barry is three strokes behind leader Florida Southern, and two strokes in back of Lynn. Saint Leo and Nova Southeastern each shot 308 and are tied for fourth.

The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the NCAA Championships May 16-19 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville.

Barry's Nancy Vergara shot even-par 72, and is three strokes behind leader Abbey Gittings of Nova Southeastern, who fired a 3-under 69. Vergara had five birdies and five bogeys in the first round. She birdied three straight holes, including the first two holes on the back nine. Her birdie on the 351-yard 11th dropped her to 1-under. Vergara remained at 1-under with a birdie on the 148-yard No. 15.

Four players are tied for third, a stroke behind Vergara. That group includes Florida Southern's duo of Melanie Audette and Jackie Rajek.
