Barry University undergraduate student Laura Loomer, was recently awarded the first-ever Miami Young Republicans Scholarship for $1,000. Loomer, a sophomore majoring in broadcast communication and minoring in political science, is vice president of Barry’s College Republicans. She was awarded the scholarship for a video she produced titled “Why I am proud to be a Republican.”
“Laura is wonderful student,” said Connie Hicks, who is Loomer’s communications professor and advisor. “She has opinions, she has questions, she reads, she listens – and is passionate about news. Within her first week on campus she was getting involved with the Young Republican Club as well as WBRY radio station.”
Dr. Sean Foreman, Barry’s history and political science professor as well as president of the Florida Political Science Association says Loomer serves as an articulate voice for conservative principles in a sea of students who are often more versed in liberal ideology.
“Laura is a very energetic and enthusiastic student who fully engages in her classes and her extracurricular activities,” said Foreman. “Not only does she excel in the classroom but she is working hard in the community supporting her favorite campaigns.”
