ORLANDO -- Barry University's men's golf team placed seventh at the McDonough Cup hosted by Rollins College Monday and Tuesday. The Bucs jumped three spots in the final round.
The No. 1-ranked Buccaneers shot 303-300-298 -- 901 to tie for seventh with Columbus State at Rio Pinar Country Club's 7,001-yard course. Lynn won the tournament, edging Nova Southeastern by three strokes after shooting 877. The Sharks took the runner-up at 880.
Barry's Scott Smyers made a charge on the final day, shooting even-par 72 to finish in a tie with teammate Simon Forsslund, who was playing in his first tournament of the season. Forsslund shot 74 in the final round to lock into the five-way tie for 14th at 223.
Lynn's Daniel Young won a five-player playoff, shooting 77-71-70 -- 218. Nova's Ben Taylor, Mount Olive's Mark O'Hara, Georgia College's Patrick Garrett and Lynn's Ernesto Vitienes all tied for second at 2-over 218.
Barry's Berry Jole carded a 4-over 76 on the final day to finish in a tie for 36th at 229. Teammate Marcus Segerstrom tied for 41st at 230 after shooting 76 Tuesday. Jared Dalga was 5-over Tuesday, falling into a grouping at 68th with a 236 in the 93-player field.
Barry finished the fall season with a tournament victory and two runner-up finishes in four events of the 2012-13 season.
The top-ranked NCAA Division II squad will begin the spring season at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland Feb. 11-12.
