PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers weathered the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes for a 55-49 win in the opening game of the McDonald Fleming Moorhead UWF Tip-Off Classic at the UWF Field House on Friday.
The Bucs (1-0) trailed by three at the half, but hit 50 percent from the field in the second period to pull away for the six-point win.
The Bucs trailed 41-38 after a three-pointer by Jasmine McSwain at the 9:37 mark of the second half. But they responded with a 13-2 run over the next 7:24, taking a 51-43 lead on a layup by Danika Pisconeri. They went on to ice the game at the line, with Dominique Dixon connecting on four-of-six in the final 0:44 seconds.
Jackie Perez led the Bucs with 12 points, including eight in the second half on perfect three-for-three shooting. Tyler Hardy came off the bench with a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Dixon chipped in with 10 points.
Jasmine McSwain led all scorers with 20 points, 14 in the first half as the ‘Canes built a 29-26 lead at the break. Stormey Smith added 10 points.
The Bucs now face the host Argonauts at 3:00 pm Eastern. The game will be carried live on the Buccaneer broadcasting Network, powered by Stretch Internet.
