MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Chad Renfro's basket at the buzzer was waved off, and Barry fell to host St. Thomas, 53-51, Tuesday.
The Buccaneers (1-1) trailed most of the game, but rallied to cut a double-digit lead to one possession when Bryan Van Cott scored on a feed from Filip Toric with 2:34 to play. Renfro tied the game at 51-51 on a basket with just over a half-minute left.
But St. Thomas guard Kevin Hincapie hit a leaner in the lane with eight seconds left after the Bucs had stopped the Bobcats' initial last-possession shot to make it a two-point game. Van Cott's half-court toss to Toric found its way to Vladimir Raymonvil under the basket, and Renfro followed with a bucket the officials waved off.
Renfro finished with 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Toric had eight points, six assists, 14 boards, a steal and a block.
The Buccaneers held the Bobcats (3-0) to 16 points in the second half on 5 of 21 shooting. But Barry shot 30.6 percent from the floor, making 15 of 49 field goals in another subpar shooting performance. The Bucs were 3-for-18 from three-point range for 16.7 percent.
Barry trailed by as many as 15 in the first half, but chiseled it down to 10 at the break. Toric sank a free throw with nine minutes to play, and the Buccaneers cut it to 46-39. Justin McCoy scored on a layup and sank a free throw to cap a three-point play to pull the Buccaneers within four with 7:07 remaining. Toric's free throw at the 3:05 mark kept the Bucs within four, and Van Cott's basket pulled the Bucs within two before the last-second drama unfolded.
The Bucs, who outrebounded the Bobcats, 39-32, were just 1 of 11 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Barry missed 15 of its 33 free throw attempts.
McCoy finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Dwaine had six boards. Hincapie scored 16 points, and Zakary Hackett 13 for the Bobcats.
The Bucs host Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 7 p.m. Monday.
