ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers closed out the Saint Leo Challenge with a pair of wins on Sunday, beating Maryville 13-3 in five innings and Francis Marion 6-3.
In the first game, the Bucs (9-5) jumped out to a big lead and held on for a 13-3 win. After loading the bases in the first inning on two hits and an error, Barry plated four runs. Julie Brito drove in two runs with a single, Britney Pugh followed with an RBI single of her own and Ashley Fernandez lifted a sacrifice fly.
In the second inning, the Bucs sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs. Ferenandez had a two runs single, while Brito, Lexi Corrente and Christal Cruz all delivered runs with singles.
The Saints (2-7) rallied for three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but Kristina Pazienza knocked a three-run homer to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Camille Czarnecki (4-2) worked 4.1 innings for the win. She allowed three runs on two hits and a three walks. Kelcey Kapitzke (1-1) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits.
In the second game, the Bucs fell behind 2-0, but rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to beat the Patriots (11-6). Natalia Ojeda and Brito each had RBI singles as the Patriots committed two errors to help fuel the rally.
Alexis Yohe got the win with four innings of work. She allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk and struck out three. Britney Pugh got the final two outs to earn her second save. Taylor Luff (7-4) took the loss for FMU. She gave up six runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks and struck out six in 5.2 innings.
The Bucs finally open the home portion of the schedule on Thursday, Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against Mercyhurst starting at 4:00 pm.
