Men's Golf Lead After 1st Round of Buccaneer Invitational

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Barry University men's golf team held a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the Buccaneer Invitational presented by Carrabba's Italian Grill.

Second round play at Normandy Shores Golf Club was delayed roughly two hours due to rain and lightning. Play resumed at 4 p.m. Monday, but only a few groups completed the second round in the 14-team, 84-player tournament the No. 2 nationally-ranked Bucs have won five straight times.

Play will resume with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday to complete the second round, and will then continue in the same threesome pairings for the final round.

Barry shot 284 in the first round on the 6,733-yard, par-71 course. The Bucs held a two-shot lead over No. 1 Nova Southeastern. Eckerd was third, five strokes behind the Buccaneers. No. 5 Lynn was fourth with a 291, and Brevard Community College fifth at 294.

Barry's Scott Smyers and Jaime Rodriguez each shot 1-under 70 in the first round, and were tied for fifth. Fellow Buccaneers Marcus Segerstrom and Jared Dalga were tied for 13th after shooting 72. Teammate Berry Jole also shot 72, while competing as an individual. Barry's Adam Svensson shot 73 in the first round, and was tied for 20th along with three other Bucs, Marcelo Huarte, John Yu and Nico Cavero, who all were competing as individuals.

Barry's Simon Forsslund shot 76, and Alvaro Beltran had a 79.

Eckerd's Jeff Evanier shot a 4-under 67, making seven birdies in the first round to take a one-stroke lead over Central Missouri's Travis Mays. St. Thomas' Stefano Diaz and Nova's Ian Facey each shot 69 to finish the opening round tied for third.

Segerstrom was one of the few players to complete the second round, shooting a 2-under 69. He birdied two of his last three holes in the first round, including the 535-yard, par-5 16th and the 529-yard, par-5 18th.

Smyers had six birdies in the opening round, including the 405-yard, par-4 first and 522-yard, par-5 third holes. He also birdied the 450-yard, par-4 ninth, 401-yard, par-4 10th, in addition to Nos. 16 and 18. Rodriguez had three birdies, sinking putts on the first, third and 421-yard, par-4 11th holes. Dalga sank birdie putts on Nos. 3, 11 and 16. Svensson birdied Nos. 1, 10 and 18.

Huarte and Jole both birdied Nos. 1 and 3. Yu sank a birdie putt on 11. Cavero had birdies on No. 3, the 316-yard, par-4 12th, the 352-yard, par-4 13th and the 200-yard 17th. Forsslund birdied Nos. 1 and 17.
