Barry University men’s golfer Adam Svensson will play in the RBC Canadian Open beginning Thursday. Svensson, who helped Barry win the NCAA Division II National Championship in May, received a sponsor’s exemption to his first PGA Tour event.

The tournament will be played at the 7,253-yard, par-72 Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario. Television coverage airs on the Golf Channel 4-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and on CBS 3-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The 156-player tournament field includes World No. 6-ranked Matt Kuchar, No. 7 Graeme McDowell, No. 8 Brandt Snedeker, No. 9 Luke Donald, No. 13 Ernie Els, No. 14 Charl Schwartzel, No. 16 Bubba Watson, No. 23 Hunter Mahan, No. 24 Dustin Johnson and two-time Canadian Open champion and No. 32 Jim Furyk. Defending champion Scott Piercy and past winners Nathan Green, Chez Reavie, Vijay Singh, Billy Andrade, Sean O’Hair, John Rollins and Scott Verplank also will compete.

Svensson, who is a member of the Canadian National Amateur Team, tees off at 2:05 p.m. Thursday in a pairing with Andrew Georgiou and Andrade.

Svensson, who hails from Surrey Vancouver, British Columbia, had a 71.26 stroke average in nine tournaments for the Buccaneers in the spring. He became the only Barry player to average under par for a season. Svensson finished second at the Southeastern Collegiate and Bobcat Invitational, and was third at the Buccaneer Invitational and South/Southeast Super Regional. He was named the Phil Mickelson Award winner, which is given to the top NCAA Division II freshman in the United States.

He won the Saputo Vancouver Open Amateur Championship in June, and finished 12th overall after shooting 68-67-70 – 205. Svensson shot 12-under par and finished second in a sudden-death playoff at the 72-hole British Columbia Amateur Championship two weeks ago.
